On a lighter note: Deliverance II.. The Porsche and Yves' encounter with Southern Law Enforcement

My good friend Yves from Belgium likes fast cars and motorcycles. He lives in Georgia so I'm surprised he hasn't been able to share other close encounters, hopefully if (and when) he does they are like this..

http://shinybrightred.blogspot.com/2008/10/deliverance-ii-encounter-with-rural.html

Thanks Yves for the good laugh, hillarious story and making the day of your friends..

Now.. I guess it's time for me to get my Australian Driver License figured out asap.. :)

Mt. Rainier Hike and Pics (for pics see post below)

About three weeks after Ironman Canada I went on a hike with a friend in Mt. Rainier National Park. For me, National Parks are the best places to vacation and visit. It's hard to describe what I personally get back from these visits, but it really is a mix of a great outdoorsy experience and something maybe even almost spiritual in terms of emotional enrichment.

That sounds like a bit much, but I can recall being a young boy and feeling excited to get to any National Forest (or Park) and then being completely at peace once I was there, wondering why I ever had to leave.
Anyhow, I was lucky to have gone to Mt. Rainier on a picture perfect day, about 70F and sunny. I was still a bit tired from Ironman and I think the hike lasted just a touch under 3 hours.. That is normally just barely enough hiking for me to feel I "got something out of it" physically, but on this day with that deep lingering fatigue that's so common in a person's body after Ironman I was ready for a beer and to be done.

I will never forget how amazing the mountain looked that day, how the meadows seemed (were) so lush, the pure alpine lakes with reflections of Rainier popping perfectly clear.

Week of 10/26

Better days in general, fall has been surprisingly dry but cool. Anytime I've snuck in on the bike has been due to me leaving work a touch early.. Not a bad thing at all as I been able to maintain better fitness and stay in the game so-to-speak much later this fall than I did last season.

Some days are touch and go if I got less than perfect sleep, but that's my fault, just need to work always being at full strength, makes a difference over time..

You'll also see I'm not posting wattage data, I'm still watching it and I'm essentially focusing on keeping good stretches of the ride at 200-200w, it's not too hard as compared to the build phase for Ironman Canada, but that stands to reason since the volume is much, much lighter.

Monday

Swim- Another of the famous, 300, 200, 100 set.. In spite of the fact that it's easy, I do a nice warm of 200 freestyle, a short kick set, some catch up drill and 200 of pulling.. Cool down is 200-300 of pulling.

Run- It was really, really rainy.. 30min run on Treadmill at YMCA..

Tuesday

Swim- Just a random lunch swim.. I drove to Green lake to run, and forgot my shoes, bummer because it was sunny..

Run- Felt great.. Did a 45min run through Marymoor to first bridge on BG & back.

Wednesday

Off

Thurs

Swim- Lunchtime swim, mainset-300,200,100 (3.47, 3.01, 1.24)

Bike- Outdoors ride on BG 1hr 20min.. 24.4 miles

Friday-

Run: Got into McMinnville a bit late due to a bizarro accicent outside of Newberg; did punch in 60min out to Youngsberg Hill and back, great run and it was quite warm.

Saturday

Swim- Wandered over to community pool for a "splash and dash session" way too distracted with other stuff to really focus on the workout

Bike- Moderate intensity ride out to Glacial Erratic and back

Sunday

Run- Mid-morning run on country roads and back..32min give/take

Bike- Mid-afternoon ride, 2hrs give/take over rolling hills to Coleman Winery and back..

Friday, October 24, 2008

Some video for Friday... Crowie, Macca, Faris..

Yup.. Stolen from SQW's blog.. He won't mind, plus, he's Canadian, so he's super polite no matter what. :)

Week of 10/19

Week of 10/19

Better week physically. Rolled through the illness from last week, started feeling good in the water again, like reasonably fast- it's really been since before IM that I felt this strong and fast, I've got to figure out how to keep that before races actually.. Anyhoo, just good all around, got decent sleep for the most part and ate good meals consistently.

Swim- 3
Bike- 4
Run-3

Bike- 45min or so of spinning while I watched Kill Bill Vol 1.

Tuesday

Run- Nice 42min run mid day at Greenlake

Bike- Trainer ride.. 55min. 200w steady.

Swim- mainset= 300,200,100

Thursday

Run- 2 laps around Greenlake 42min give/take

Swim- Mainset 300,200, 100.. First good swim session in ages. (4.45, 2.58, 1.25 all on 30sec rest)

Friday-

Off, just feeling really wrecked today for whatever reason..

Saturday-

Bike: Easy, cruise on BG, 1hr 45min, 29miles

Sunday

Bike- Longish ride out into Carnation via 202 and back; around 3hrs.. Carnation valley was amazing, colors were just perfectly vibrant.

Lahde quits his own Hedge Fund...

And thanks over privileged idiots for success.

(thanks to Paul Schoen for the article btw)

I've actually encountered these idiots, they run around the halls of local Fortune 100 companies with jobs they were essentially gifted by way of the undergrad degree, family connections, (actually know people on a personal level who slid in there) and alumni reach.

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aVUE96d.HKyw&ref=patrick.net

And as Lahde points out these folks are at Goldman Sachs, AIG, Lehman, Merrill... And the rest are at McKinsey or Bain.

I'll be candid, it's no wonder that what seemed like common sense measures to any level-headed person, like modeling out disaster scenarios further than they did and having contingency measures to trigger shifts in portfolio allocation just didn't happen.

Now we're going to have kill capitalism in an over-reaction to appease Mainstreet USA, the debt markets will recover but after they do can we really expect the policies to be lifted?

Images from race day at Ironman Hawaii..

Last weekend was IMH.. Crowie won on the men's side.. Chrissie Wellington repeated on the womens side. Alot of really fit looking Triathletes here.

http://www.slowtwitch.com/photos/Detailed/13.html

For me, next season will come soon enough. Planning is underway and I'm sure I will pull together the schedule soon, I'm already excited which means I didn't completely burn myself out this last year.

I lost a training partner and a friend in the last year and will go it alone mostly this next season unfortunately but that's life, going it alone will be a test but I think punching the clock more often alone will only help me.

The fact is I trained solo most of this season, just my own breathing, foot steps, splashy swim stroke and noise of the bike in my ears. More of the same, but I really don't mind, I'm always dreaming that each session has some element of competition and that I'm right in the thick of it..

Pretty Walter Mitty-ish eh?

Week of 10/12

What I'm buying, Re Stocks..

It's the off-season so I have a lot of time on my hands. First of all, I should disclose a few of these I own and a few I don’t, more on that later.

Msft: No surprises here.. Why? Simple it always trades in a “trough” from the low/mid twenties to mid/high 30’s. It’s at the low end right now, and unlike other large cap orgs it didn’t fall below it’s trough low point to begin a new, lower breakout.. I’m sure a chart tactician would scold me for not using the right terminology here.

Two ways to go here, add to your position, hold for the long term or hold for 12 months and swing trade it when it perks up.

Apple: Another no brainer. If you ever wanted to own a best-in-class org with industry leading products/services this would be the time. It’s hanging tight at about $100 a share, and I’m sure after Xmas when we have another earnings report we should see a share bump.

Why buy? Well, even with the perception that people feel like they have less discretionary income they are still spending on things like music and concerts, oh that and tourism.. Memories vs. material possessions..

Orthologic (CAPS)- Interesting drug dev outfit I’ve been following for a long time. They had a phase 2 FDA failure almost two years ago (and the stock dropped like a falling knife) because they weren’t able to show “statistically significant” evidence the peptide healed bone fractures. (that’s off the top of my head btw)… Problem was the how the trial was structured, not the drug.

It was obviously the fault of the then CEO who was fired immediately after that and replaced w/someone who’s guided other dev orgs through the FDA approval process. Why not ask for a “do-over” ? It appears they tried. Anyhow, they are looking for other applications as it applies to internal healing.

This is a penny stock (.88 as of this morning) and it’s trading in arrears of .70 of cash value, so it’s got that going for it.. Before the FDA failure it was a $6 stock and I’m sure would have crested $10 based on what I’ve seen in the past from other companies in this space.. This one is a long-term buy and hold, kinda of your lottery ticket.

Google (GOOG)- Need I say more?

Really, it’s lost half it’s value recently and not due to anything that the company is/was doing wrong, fact is they should still be making money hand over fist in any economy with their position and business model, and they are... People used to think it was *amazing* that it became a $200 stock, well right now you can get it for a little more than $390-ish give/take. Ha.

Seriously though, it’s got legs. Throwing out the 52 week high Goog has got at least a buck fifty or so in it as the market shakes out.

Mutual Funds:

Lat Am (blend of Mexico, Central America, South America)

SE Asia (funds that blend Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong)

Funds whose holdings are negative beta biased. Duh, you know the Altrias (Phillip Morris) of the market.

Why? Blended funds offer a hedge of single country funds, right now it doesn’t seem to matter too much. There are funds that are short of the markets and they are doing really well.. I wouldn’t put my money in those for more than 6-9 months btw.

The emerging markets still have more top-line growth in them as a rule vs. the US economy.
Sure, there are sectors in the US that have some more room, but the US is a really mature (duh) economy, so as rule it’s going to grow more slowly (and more predictable too).. If you wanted, you can be long the markets in something like QQQQ (Nasdaq, the entire market) but to me that’s a get-to-it-later kind of hedge on your portfolio kind of purchase.

What will I buy first? I dunno. Probably Msft, then CAPS and try to get to the others around Nov hoping they sink a bit.

Disclosure: I’m heavily weighted toward BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, China) at the moment, holdings are in Asia & Lat Am. I don't hold Msft, Goog, CAPS, Apple.

Grand Canyon hike, trip and camping at Phantom Ranch is cancelled...

Damn. Seriously..

I was really looking forward to it actually.. C'est la vie. Well, maybe I should have attempted a shot at SOMA in Tempe?

O.k. well although that's bad news I suppose I can find other stuff to keep me occupied.

American Birkebeiner & Kortelopet (qualifying..)

I'm interested in doing the Birke this year, basically a nordic ski marathon... Oh and Bjorn Daehlie is doing it too..

https://www.birkie.com/?page=1036

So, I'd have to qualify and I have no idea whether I can or not, but if it is within the realm of possibility I'd like to try..

Here is the only event close to me:

Boulder Mountain Tour - Feb 7, 2009 Sun Valley, ID, 800-634-3347, http://www.bouldermountaintour.com/

A trip to Sun Valley shouldn't be all that bad. :)

We'll see, if I get word that I won't have a snowball's chance in hell (pun intended) I won't even bother.

Btw, if any of the blog followers know anything about it, please shoot me a note or post up here.. Maybe I can even train with a few of you.

Could be a good way to spend all of my free weekends, that is training up in the mountains or after work.

Form, Fitness and week of 10/5

Form and Fitness. I have a lot of fitness, not much form. Form is race-readiness combined with deep fitness. I think the form is long gone, although I feel well enough to do solid workouts day in, day out and though some snappiness has come back into the body I'm not going to really be able to race this fall.

That's the verdict. No SOMA Half Iron, no Cross-Country races.

As I said before Nordic season is approaching, and I'd really like to start that as early as possible simply because I enjoy it so much.

The World Famous Kona (Ironman Hawaii) Underpants run.. (linky)

Ah.. The underpants run at Ironman Canada wasn't this cool or organized. Yeah, I did it when I was up there, duh. You know people add costume elements to their get up.. I was like, I'm here in underpants and a pair of running shoes.

Oh, you want pictures of me doing that? :) Good luck !

Well, just be warned some of the pics from Hawaii's UP run are a bit risque' but I'm pretty sure nobody following the blog will be offended. :)

The Bourne Redundancy: Matt Damon you must do a Triathlon...

Or something like that... Apparently Damon's brother did one.. So Matt Damon thinks he should too..

http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20231275,00.html

It's all good. What's a little surprising is that Damon has run a 10k before in 59min and change.

Whoops!

He looks so fast in those Bourne "whatever" movies, but maybe the bad guys are really out of shape.

Maybe I wish I'd made it to Kona after all....

Oh man.. It looks like so much fun..

On another note.. The XC/Nordic season begins officially Nov 8th

Yeah well, it starts that early at Silverstar in B.C. .. Super, super cool.

It's probably too early to start thinking nordic skiing but this last weekend was really rough with windstorms here in Seattle.

Anyhow, Silverstar is the premier resort, I've yet to ski there- full report in a month. :)
